Does AI Personality-Targeted Advertising Actually Work? The Research.
Doctoral research by Dr. Eva Wolf, DBA (Florida International University, 2026): a within-subjects experiment testing AI-generated, Big Five personality-targeted advertisements with 394 B2B decision-makers. The short answer: AI personalization works — selectively, not universally. Some personality cues lift persuasion. Mismatched cues backfire. The only way to know which is which is to test.
The Three Findings Every Marketer Should Know
1. Extraversion-targeted ads worked.
Ads aligned to extraversion produced the clearest, statistically significant lift in message relevance and perceived persuasiveness among B2B decision-makers.
2. Conscientiousness-targeted ads backfired.
Ads matched to conscientiousness showed a significant reverse effect on perceived persuasiveness — the “personalized” message performed worse. Openness, Agreeableness, and Neuroticism targeting showed no reliable effects at all.
3. Relevance and persuasiveness drive intent.
Together, message relevance and perceived persuasiveness explained 76.4% of click-through intention — making them the levers that matter most, regardless of personality targeting.
AI personalization should be tested, not assumed. Generative AI makes it effortless to create a thousand “personalized” variants. It does not make them effective. Strategy is deciding which variants deserve to scale.

Selectively. In this doctoral research with 394 B2B decision-makers, extraversion-aligned AI ads significantly improved relevance and persuasiveness, while conscientiousness-aligned ads produced a reverse effect. Personalization is a hypothesis to test, not a switch to turn on.
Yes. The study found a statistically significant negative effect for conscientiousness-targeted ads on perceived persuasiveness — evidence that mismatched personalization carries a real cost, not just zero benefit.
